How app testing works

  1. 01

Sign in and join the testers group

Sign in with Google, then join our testers Google Group once. That is what lets Google Play install closed tests on your phone.

  2. 02

Pick an app that needs testers

Browse apps from indie developers, read what they want tested, and take a slot.

  3. 03

Install within 48 hours of the queue filling

Open the testing link, tap Become a tester, install from Google Play and send your First Impressions.

  4. 04

    Report on days 4, 7, 10 and 14

Short, specific feedback on the features the developer listed. Keep the app installed for the full 14 days.

  5. 05

Earn credits and climb the ladder

20 credits per app you finish, a +5 bonus every 3 apps in a row, and a place on the Best testers ladder.

What you get as a tester

Android app tester FAQ

Do I get paid to test Android apps?

You earn credits, not cash. Every feedback report earns credits, finishing an app's five checkpoints earns 20, and finishing 3 apps in a row adds a 5-credit bonus. 60 credits list your own app for testing, so testing three apps gets your app tested by real people for free.

What do I need to become an app tester?

An Android phone, a Google account, and a few minutes a few times over two weeks. You join our testers Google Group once, which is how Google Play lets you install closed tests.

How much time does testing an app take?

About 10 minutes per report. You send a short report on days 1, 4, 7, 10, 14 of a 14-day test, and keep the app installed in between.

What happens after I join an app?

When the app's tester queue is full you have 48 hours to install it from Google Play and send your First Impressions. If you don't, the slot goes to someone else, so only join apps you will actually install.

Is it safe?

Apps are installed from Google Play's own closed testing track, so they go through Google Play's normal checks. You can leave an app before its test starts, and uninstall it once the test ends.

Why do developers need testers?

Google Play requires new personal developer accounts to run a closed test with at least 12 testers opted in for 14 days in a row before an app can go public. Testers are what make that possible.
